For decades, the self (e.g. ego, identity, self-concept) and related processes (e.g. self-esteem, self-reflection) have been a central concern of social and behavioral scientists as well as mental health professionals. In fact, it is arguably the most widely studied topic within Social Psychology, with numerous edited collections, articles and, most recently, the launch of the journal Self & Identity (Psychology Press). Many of the published collections have, however, been a somewhat specialized and have usually put forth the latest research on the topic by the individual contributors to the volume. The current proposal will also bring together the very latest research on the self and its related processes, providing a comprehensive and up-to-date review of empirical, theoretical, and practical issues in this field. In main subtopics are the section headings of the proposal: Brain & Cognition; Motivation; Emotions & Self-esteem; and Interpersonal, Intergroup, & Cultural Context. Within these categories, topics include the Self in the Brain, Implicit Self, Autobiographical Memory, Social Comparison, the Narcissistic Self, Self-Control, Self-Evaluation, role of Self-esteem, Intimate Relationships, Stereotyping, Prejudice, and Discrimination, Socially Excluded Self, and Cultural Context. So, far from being specialized, the contributors' brief is to provide an overview of all the latest research within each sub-topic of the Self and also to set it in its historical context. As such, the volume will become a 'mini-handbook' on the Self, with each chapter written by an internationally renowned scholar - see attached outline. This book is intended to appeal to instructors andstudents of Social Psychology and will function as a supplementary text in courses on the Self at the upper-level undergraduate and, more especially, graduate level. In sum, the aim of the volume is to: - introduce students to the topic of Self, by reviewing the major findings and theory in an area- provide an overview of all the major sub-topics of the Self- encourage new research on the Self, by discussing current research programs and possible directions.

Many of us experience ourselves as having or being a 'self', even though we may not be clear what that is. The philosophical papers in this volume reflect on key questions about the self, such as: Does the self exist? If so, what is its nature? Is it a single thing, or could there be a succession of selves? Could our sense of a single continuous self be an illusion? What are the ethical implications of selfhood? And what is the relation between self-expression and self-control? The papers are written by leading authorities in the field: Barry Dainton, Ingmar Persson, Marya Schechtman, Bas van Fraassen, Peter van Inwagen, and the volume editor, Galen Strawson.
